It's Sunday - my favorite day of the week. It's a time for worship and family and friends and NAPS. Okay, so maybe NAPS is almost my favorite time. But it's been a good day.
Jim and I picked up Nikki to take her to church with us. She's our friend who is blind and developmentally disabled. She's been acting out pretty badly for the last couple of months, but we took her anyway. We got to church, sat down waiting for the service to start and she started 'hollering'. Pretty loudly. Not about anything particular, just to show out. We tried to calm her down - to no avail, until I threatened to call 'Miss', her older sister. She said, 'No, I'll be good.'. And, she was.
During the time we are worshiping with music, I tend to bounce around alot. And, since Nikki can't see, she often puts her hand on me. And, she knows I 'dance'. She cracks me up, when she's standing and bouncing around to the music, and puts her hand on her hip to make sure she's moving like I do. It is SO funny. But, this post is only partially about Nikki.
Nick Vujicic was our special speaker today. He has a ministry called Life Without Limbs. He was born without arms and legs. He does have one small deformed foot that appears to be attached very close to the hip. He spoke, not about what he didn't have, but about what he has - peace, love, humility, boldness, grace, the assurance of where he will spend eternity. He reminded us that while God can and does perform miracles, sometimes he chooses not to. He said, 'What if God had given me arms and legs when I was 8 years old and asked for them? There would be at least 2000 less people in heaven.' He knows his purpose and he loves the Lord. (You can find him at lifewithoutlimbs.org)
I spent the entire way home thanking God for my life and all the wonderful, amazing blessings I have. Health, loving hubby, good strong responsible kids, great friends, a nice home, jobs we love, electricity, and air conditioning to name just a few. My challenge to you today is to think not of the things you don't have or the things that aggravate you, but about the things you DO have and remember they are gifts from the Most Holy Creator and God.
And here's Nikki. Isn't she pretty?
